The History of CBD

While CBD has taken on new prominence in recent years, its incorporation into medical or lifestyle products isn’t a new trend. While most people think that this miracle substance is a new marvel of modern science, the history of CBD actually dates back as far as the 1940s. Long before the approval of recreational and medicinal use of marijuana was legalized. Surprisingly, however, the THC component that causes psychoactive effects aren’t required for proper support. In this article, we will look at the original roots of the CBD and explore some of the reasons it has become so popular in recent years.

The first successful extraction of CBD from the cannabis sativa plant occurred in 1940 by a Harvard University graduate named Roger Adams. However, it is important to note that once he extracted the chemical compound he didn’t really know what he had actually accomplished. After years of research, Adams and his colleagues realized the possible benefits that could be obtained by utilizing the compound that they had extracted and began researching what health benefits the compound could provide.

It wasn’t until the first clinical lab tests of CBD began on animals in 1946 through the research of Dr. Walter S. Loewe. Through these tests, he was able to prove that the animal test subjects didn’t enter an altered mind state through the consumption of CBD because the THC compound wasn’t present. During the same year, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam successfully identified the 3D structure of CBD and was credited as the scientist who discovered the compound.

Over the following decades, the research into the possible benefits of CBD continued; however, it wasn’t until 1980 that Dr. Mechoulam’s continued studies found another potential breakthrough. During this study, he and his team found that cannabidiol could be a potential treatment for epilepsy. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until recently that the stigma surrounding CBD began to dissipate and allow it to become a common treatment for a variety of ailments.

Now that CBD has become legal in most states, it has become a successful treatment option for many individuals that are attempting to treat symptoms like pain, depression, anxiety, stress, inflammation and other illnesses. In some cases, it has even helped replaced pain killers that have a high rate of addiction. While no one can predict the future of CBD, we are confident that it will continue to treat a plethora of modern illnesses that would otherwise require unhealthy pharmaceuticals.
