How Is CBD Oil Manufactured?

Backed by decades of research, CBD oil has quickly become a staple product for many health-conscious individuals since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill. CBD oil is derived from hemp plants an is extracted from the seed and stalks of cannabis plants that have less than 0.3% THC content. But what exactly is the process that is required to turn a hemp plant into a usable CBD oil? Let’s explore the manufacturing process together.

Before the manufacturing process can begin, a suitable hemp plant must be cultivated and harvested. In most cases, this will be industrial hemp that has been grown commercially and resembles bamboo stalks instead of a small plant. Each of these plants can grow anywhere between 10 to 15 feet prior to being cultivated. One added benefit is that industrial hemp naturally contains less than 0.3% THC making it legal for use as a CBD product.

After the industrial hemp has been harvested, the extraction process will begin the conversion process to CBD oil. While there are many different extraction processes that can be used, the most trusted will typically rely on CO2 which is forced through the ground plant material. This will, in turn, pull fats, beneficial compounds and the essential oils to create a viscous material that has blended with the CO2 solvent. Once the solvent is removed, the final product is an oil that has high levels of natural CBD.

After undergoing strict testing, the CBD oil then goes through a process called decarboxylation to transform the cannabinoids in the oil into a form that can easily be used by the body both orally and topically. This end product can also be used as a base for a variety of other products such as gummies, vape cartridges and more.
